Smokebox Magazine News September 2009

Welcome to a New Year in the clubs history

Looking back over our old club records I find that the club was formed on the 1st September 1987 at the Bedfordshire village of Ridgmont, this means that the club has been in existence for 22 years. I was not a member back then but we still have a few of our original members in our ranks today, I am sure they must have a few stories to tell. The club has been through a number of changes over the past 22 years but has always had a good loyal membership in spite of a number of involuntary moves over the last few years, we have always managed to keep our links with Bedfordshire so can legitimately call ourselves "The Bedfordshire Group". Our members are drawn from the broad geographic base of Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, with some of our members travelling from well outside the area. I hope that we can now look forward to another successful year of doing what we do best, playing trains and having a natter.

Being the beginning of a new year also means that its Subscription time, it has always been the intention that the members annual subscription should cover the cost of the hall. During our search for a new home for our monthly running sessions it became quite obvious that we would need to increase the level of Subs. For this year, the club funds have covered the extra cost for 2008/2009, from September 2009 our subs will increase to £25 per year, we expect to hold them at this the following year as well. When you think the average cost of a new loco is getting on for £1000, I still think that it represents good value for money.
